We Can, & We Will Be Somebody Who Makes Everybody Feel Like Somebody at Eanes Elementary!

Aladdin Jr. Musical

Mrs. Ryan's Weekly Message

Dear Eanes Families,

Thank you for a fabulous week, Mustangs! Special thanks to Photographers of Westlake for capturing the beauty of each and every EE child during picture day this week.  We cannot wait to see their smiling faces in print when they emerge in the yearbook this spring!  Also, a big shout out goes to the Eanes Elementary EEF team for putting on a fabulous House Party, held at the Massingill Family's beautiful home!  Thanks for all who attended - it was a blast!

Although it is hard to believe, Parent/Teacher Conferences are only three weeks away.   Many of you have received directions (or will very soon!) on how to sign up for conferences via Skyward Family Access.  Elementary Parent/Teacher Conferences are primarily scheduled on October 25th, 26th and 27th.  Please sign up for one time slot per child. EE teachers are eager to share individualized information about your child.  Please note that teachers have several conferences to conduct, so please honor your scheduled conference time.   Most conferences will be held in your child's homeroom classroom. If your child receives instruction from more than one teacher, those teachers may be present during the conference, but if they are not in your conference, detailed feedback will be shared with your child's homeroom teacher to provide insight.

In preparation of parent conferences, Skyward Family Access grade information will not be available one week prior to the end of the grading period.  As the first grading period ends, Friday, October 20, 2017, the grade access will be turned off on Friday, October 13, 2017.   Please remember October 25, 26 and 27 are half-days for all students.  Students will be dismissed at 11:45 AM.  No lunches will be served, but buses will run on these three days.

With so much going on in our world and across our country, I'm comforted by the joy and safety that EE provides for our students, staff, and community.  Like Mr. Rodgers once said, "When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, 'Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping."  Eanes Elementary is such a wonderful and caring safe haven for all of us, and as we look around it each day, we can always find the joy and the helpers...even on the darkest of days.  Thank you for continuing to brighten our lives each day, Mustangs!

Enjoy a fabulous, three-day weekend!

With gratitude,

Lesley Ryan

An important part of teaching the curriculum in any classroom is having a positive and safe learning environment. Social and emotional learning (SEL) provides the foundation for this environment. EISD has chosen to highlight relationship skills as our SEL focus for the first nine weeks. Using Second Step as our curriculum, teachers are helping students develop the skills necessary to develop healthy relationships with others.

As our partners in education, we encourage you to support our efforts in this area. The Parent Toolkit is a resource for parents that was developed by NBC News Education Nation and is supported by Pearson. The Toolkit provides parents a wealth of information, in English and Spanish, on social and emotional development in addition to academics, health & wellness, financial literacy, and college & career.

According to the Parent Toolkit one way to help your elementary school student learn social skills and nurture relationship-building abilities is to teach the “sandwich” technique. “In basic terms, this method involves ‘sandwiching’ the feedback or problem between a compliment and a positive conclusion.” If your child feels a friend is being unkind, teach your child how to handle the problem by starting with a positive, sharing the concern, and ending with another positive. For example, “I am glad we are friends, and I want to be friends. At lunch yesterday, you yelled at me and made me sad. I want to be friends so next time, could you tell me if I’m doing something you don’t like.”
