SELF-AWARENESS: “There is an emerging body of research that indicates mindfulness can help children improve their abilities to calm down when they are upset and to make better decisions,” which is being self-aware. “Establishing a gratitude practice … is a fundamental component of mindfulness.” Teaching kids to be thankful is one way to practice gratitude. “My family does this at dinner when we each share one thing we are thankful for.” The article “8 Ways to Teach Mindfulness to Kids” gives additional strategies on how to teach your child to be mindful. Daniel Goleman introduces the strategy of using “Breathing Buddies” to help younger children learn how to be mindful: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=scqFHGI_nZE SELF-MANAGEMENT: Self-control or self-management is an important skill for children to learn. “Studies have shown that impulsivity in childhood has been linked to substance abuse, risky sexual behavior, criminal activity and aggression in adolescence and adulthood.” One way to help children learn how to control their impulses is to teach the child how to “think through the problem.” Teach your child how to solve the problem rather than reacting “to a feeling”. “Teaching Kids Self-Control” gives specific strategies parents can use to teach their children how to “learn to be thoughtful and practice restraint.”
