We Can, & We Will Be Somebody Who Makes Everybody Feel Like Somebody at Eanes Elementary!

Dear Eanes Elementary Families,

As we begin November, it gives us an opportunity to pause and reflect on the things for which we are grateful.  To have an attitude of gratitude is a gift for both the bearer and the receiver.  When we model thankfulness for our children, we are giving them a gift that is lifelong.

This month, we will embrace this attitude of gratitude in a variety of ways.  One opportunity for you as EE Parents to express your gratitude is through accessing our EE Staff Shout Out Form:(https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSemMP8p0H_1UxMl6NSZaOh6FYjKRWHTWvqqdPol5X2omCouVQ/viewform?usp=sf_link )

On this form, you will be able to let a staff member know how he or she positively impacted your child or your family.  Not only will it fill the staff member's bucket, but also it will fill your bucket.  One of the strategies we teach our students is to fill others' buckets through kind gestures and thoughtful messages.   We hope you will take the opportunity to express your gratitude, and, in turn, reap the benefits.  If this format does not work for you, we all recognize the power of a handwritten note or positive email.  A kind message can go a long way, as we have all experienced in our lives.

Thank you for your continued support and expressions of gratitude for our EE staff!

EISD has chosen to highlight self-awareness and self-management as our SEL focus for the second nine weeks.

SELF-AWARENESS: “There is an emerging body of research that indicates mindfulness can help children improve their abilities to calm down when they are upset and to make better decisions,” which is being self-aware.

“Establishing a gratitude practice … is a fundamental component of mindfulness.” Teaching kids to be thankful is one way to practice gratitude. “My family does this at dinner when we each share one thing we are thankful for.” The article “8 Ways to Teach Mindfulness to Kids” gives additional strategies on how to teach your child to be mindful.

Daniel Goleman introduces the strategy of  using “Breathing Buddies” to help younger children learn how to be mindful: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=scqFHGI_nZE

SELF-MANAGEMENT: Self-control or self-management is an important skill for children to learn. “Studies have shown that impulsivity in childhood has been linked to substance abuse, risky sexual behavior, criminal activity and aggression in adolescence and adulthood.” One way to help children learn how to control their impulses is to teach the child how to “think through the problem.” Teach your child how to solve the problem rather than reacting “to a feeling”. “Teaching Kids Self-Control” gives specific strategies parents can use to teach their children how to “learn to be thoughtful and practice restraint.”
