December 11, 2017 We Can, & We Will Be Somebody Who Makes Everybody Feel Like Somebody at Eanes Elementary! Dear Eanes Elementary Families, Welcome back to school following our snowy adventures in Austin! We hope you stayed warm and enjoyed the winter weather this weekend! Today, our 4th and 5th grade students will attend the Nutcracker Spectacular performance at Westlake High School. If you have not seen the Nutcracker Spectacular before, this is a unique collaboration of the WHS Symphony Orchestra, WHS Tech Crew and Alisa's Dance Academy. Many of our own Eanes Elementary students will be dancing in the ballet, and it's sure to be a great finale to this series of Nutcracker performances! This Thursday and Friday, our 3rd grade students will showcase their entreprenurial skills at our annual "3rd Grade Market Day". All EE students are welcome to bring change to school, as well as a disposible shopping bag for their newly purchased goodies. Items range in cost from $0.25 to about $1.00. Check out the students' commercials on the third grade teachers' websites to see which goodies will be available for purchase!
Looking ahead, one of our favorite traditions in Eanes ISD is the annual performance by the Westlake Madrigals. These very talented choir students have auditioned to be part of this prestigious group. As educators, we always enjoy seeing our former students perform and try to recognize them from their elementary days! We look forward to this wonderful performance at assembly on Friday, December 15th at 7:35 am in the cafeteria. Please feel free to join us for this special treat. We Can, and We Will Be Somebody Who Makes Everybody Feel Like Somebody at Eanes Elementary! With gratitude, Lesley Ryan EE Principal

SELF-AWARENESS: “There is an emerging body of research that indicates mindfulness can help children improve their abilities to calm down when they are upset and to make better decisions,” which is being self-aware. “Establishing a gratitude practice … is a fundamental component of mindfulness.” Teaching kids to be thankful is one way to practice gratitude. “My family does this at dinner when we each share one thing we are thankful for.” The article “8 Ways to Teach Mindfulness to Kids” gives additional strategies on how to teach your child to be mindful. Daniel Goleman introduces the strategy of using “Breathing Buddies” to help younger children learn how to be mindful: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=scqFHGI_nZE SELF-MANAGEMENT: Self-control or self-management is an important skill for children to learn. “Studies have shown that impulsivity in childhood has been linked to substance abuse, risky sexual behavior, criminal activity and aggression in adolescence and adulthood.” One way to help children learn how to control their impulses is to teach the child how to “think through the problem.” Teach your child how to solve the problem rather than reacting “to a feeling”. “Teaching Kids Self-Control” gives specific strategies parents can use to teach their children how to “learn to be thoughtful and practice restraint.”
