We Can, & We Will Be Somebody Who Makes Everybody Feel Like Somebody at Eanes Elementary!

Dear Eanes Elementary Families,

This week has been filled with joyful noises across campus, ranging from 2nd grade's ocean conservation musical to this morning's holiday music provided by both the recorder choir and EE choir members.  Additionally, our classrooms are bursting at the seams with holiday spirit and cheer as students and staff members approach the break.

As we wrap up 2017, we want to thank you for sharing the most precious gift of all with us - your incredible children.  We hope you and your families create and enjoy special memories together during this holiday season, and we will do the same with ours over the break.  These two weeks provide the perfect opportunity for P-D-F time (play time, down time, and family time)!

Our Eanes staff will be thrilled to welcome back our students on Tuesday, January 9, 2018 at 7:15 am.  Kindergarten students will begin the spring semester by venturing out to morning playground time alongside 1st and 2nd grades on the upper playgrounds.  3rd graders will head to the lower playgrounds on this date to join 4th and 5th grade students.  We will see you in 2018, Mustangs!!

With gratitude,

Mrs. Ryan

EISD has chosen to highlight self-awareness and self-management as our SEL focus for the second nine weeks.

SELF-AWARENESS: “There is an emerging body of research that indicates mindfulness can help children improve their abilities to calm down when they are upset and to make better decisions,” which is being self-aware.

“Establishing a gratitude practice … is a fundamental component of mindfulness.” Teaching kids to be thankful is one way to practice gratitude. “My family does this at dinner when we each share one thing we are thankful for.” The article “8 Ways to Teach Mindfulness to Kids” gives additional strategies on how to teach your child to be mindful.

Daniel Goleman introduces the strategy of  using “Breathing Buddies” to help younger children learn how to be mindful: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=scqFHGI_nZE

SELF-MANAGEMENT: Self-control or self-management is an important skill for children to learn. “Studies have shown that impulsivity in childhood has been linked to substance abuse, risky sexual behavior, criminal activity and aggression in adolescence and adulthood.” One way to help children learn how to control their impulses is to teach the child how to “think through the problem.” Teach your child how to solve the problem rather than reacting “to a feeling”. “Teaching Kids Self-Control” gives specific strategies parents can use to teach their children how to “learn to be thoughtful and practice restraint.”
