We Can, & We Will Be Somebody Who Makes Everybody Feel Like Somebody at Eanes Elementary!

Aladdin Jr. Musical

Mrs. Ryan's Weekly Message

Dear Eanes Families,

Thank you for a fabulous week at Eanes Elementary.  We welcomed Dr. Tom Leonard, our EISD Superintendent, to our campus Tuesday to deliver our State of the District overview to our general PTO meeting.  He shared district-wide goals and initiatives on which we are focusing on all nine EISD campuses.  He shared detailed information on the impact of the fund balance decrease and trajectory as well as the state recapture that's totaled upwards of one billion dollars over the past few decades from our district.  Lastly, Dr. Leonard explained details around a ballot proposition that Eanes ISD has explained in its Swap and Drop overview as proposition 1 in the November election. Thank you for those able to attend this week's meeting.

This week, I had the opportunity to co-teach sketchnoting lessons with our Educational Technologist, Mrs. Debbie Smith.  We work hard to provide students with tools for their toolkits on how to approach learning and content in ways that best meet their learning styles, and we feel passionate about this approach in particular. We continue to be amazed by our staff members' interest in providing a variety of pathways to student learning in their classrooms, and we look forward to venturing into other classrooms to share this approach in the months to come.

Last, but not least, we will have our first Early Release Day this Tuesday, September 26, 2017.  We use this time to collaborate within our professional learning communities to find the best ways to serve all students in their learning and growth.  Eanes Elementary  students will be dismissed at 12:45 PM. Buses will run and lunches will be served on this day.

Update on Social Emotional Learning (SEL) and Report Cards for K-5 Students

Eanes ISD is dedicated to ensuring our students have both strong academic skills and social-emotional learning skills.  This year we are using the Second Step curriculum to teach the skills of building healthy relationships, making good choices, exercising empathy for others, understanding who we are as individuals; as well as, being resilient in difficult situations.    While we have focused on building healthy relationships for the first nine weeks, we plan to embed the teaching of the other skills in our academic curriculum as appropriate.

When you see the first report card for your child in Grades K-5, you may notice that what used to be called Social Development/Work Habits has been changed to Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Skills.  These skills are grade-specific as students gain strength in each area over time.  For each SEL competency, teachers will mark Beginning (needs more practice), Progressing (needs more consistency in exercising the skill) and Strong (consistently understands and applies the skill).

General Questions?  Please contact Linda Rawlings, Director of Student Support Services for SEL (lrawlings@eanesisd.net) Specific Questions about your child? Please contact your child's teacher.

An important part of teaching the curriculum in any classroom is having a positive and safe learning environment. Social and emotional learning (SEL) provides the foundation for this environment. EISD has chosen to highlight relationship skills as our SEL focus for the first nine weeks. Using Second Step as our curriculum, teachers are helping students develop the skills necessary to develop healthy relationships with others.

As our partners in education, we encourage you to support our efforts in this area. The Parent Toolkit is a resource for parents that was developed by NBC News Education Nation and is supported by Pearson. The Toolkit provides parents a wealth of information, in English and Spanish, on social and emotional development in addition to academics, health & wellness, financial literacy, and college & career.

According to the Parent Toolkit one way to help your elementary school student learn social skills and nurture relationship-building abilities is to teach the “sandwich” technique. “In basic terms, this method involves ‘sandwiching’ the feedback or problem between a compliment and a positive conclusion.” If your child feels a friend is being unkind, teach your child how to handle the problem by starting with a positive, sharing the concern, and ending with another positive. For example, “I am glad we are friends, and I want to be friends. At lunch yesterday, you yelled at me and made me sad. I want to be friends so next time, could you tell me if I’m doing something you don’t like.”
