Dear Eanes Elementary Families,

Thank you so much for those of you who have taken the time to give our staff members shout outs via our Google Form.  Your Attitude of Gratitude is contagious!!  Thank you!  Truly, you've made the teachers' days with your kind words and sentiments!  The link for the shout out is:

This week provided us with many opportunities to celebrate our school community, thus giving us the chance to pause and express our gratitude.  We celebrated Veteran's Day this morning at the EE assembly, and our turn out was wonderful!  Veterans shared the military branches in which they served, their roles within the military, and their special family members at EE who invited them to attend this special, annual tradition.  Additionally our Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Brownie Troops, and Girl Scouts exuded patriotism during their presentation of the colors and pledge leadership.  EE student artwork was on display across campus, and students in 3rd grade performed two musical pieces for the assembly to thank our honored Veterans.  Mrs. Willoughby and Mrs. Smith put together an incredible slide show, recognizing our Veterans, and we will put it on the website soon to share with you!  As you can tell, it was a morning to be remembered! We love this tradition, and it's an honor to welcome these heroes onto our campus each year!

On Monday, our 5th graders will embark on the experience EISD students look forward to for years and years - Live Oak Adventure!  For three days, students will band together to problem solve, team build, and enjoy one another at Highland Lakes Camp.  It's sure to be an exciting trip for our fifth graders, though our staff members (myself included) might need a long nap after we return on Wednesday!  Please wish our 5th graders well as they enjoy this Eanes ISD tradition beginning Monday morning!

Last, but certainly not least, our staff would like to convey an attitude of gratitude to you, our EE families, for your continued support, encouragement, and partnership.  These relationships with our EE families make this an incredible place to teach, learn, and grow each and every day alongside your phenomenal children, for whom we are immensely grateful.  Enjoy a fun and safe weekend!

With gratitude,

Lesley Ryan

EE Principal

Eanes ISD voters overwhelmingly passed the proposed tax ratification, or Penny Swap & Drop proposition by 89 percent in the November 7 election. The TRE approval lowers the overall Eanes ISD tax rate by more than a penny to $1.20 and adds an estimated $3 million of non-recapturable funds to the district's operating budget.

EISD has chosen to highlight self-awareness and self-management as our SEL focus for the second nine weeks.

SELF-AWARENESS: “There is an emerging body of research that indicates mindfulness can help children improve their abilities to calm down when they are upset and to make better decisions,” which is being self-aware.

“Establishing a gratitude practice … is a fundamental component of mindfulness.” Teaching kids to be thankful is one way to practice gratitude. “My family does this at dinner when we each share one thing we are thankful for.” The article “8 Ways to Teach Mindfulness to Kids” gives additional strategies on how to teach your child to be mindful.

Daniel Goleman introduces the strategy of  using “Breathing Buddies” to help younger children learn how to be mindful: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=scqFHGI_nZE

SELF-MANAGEMENT: Self-control or self-management is an important skill for children to learn. “Studies have shown that impulsivity in childhood has been linked to substance abuse, risky sexual behavior, criminal activity and aggression in adolescence and adulthood.” One way to help children learn how to control their impulses is to teach the child how to “think through the problem.” Teach your child how to solve the problem rather than reacting “to a feeling”. “Teaching Kids Self-Control” gives specific strategies parents can use to teach their children how to “learn to be thoughtful and practice restraint.”
