December 1, 2017 We Can, & We Will Be Somebody Who Makes Everybody Feel Like Somebody at Eanes Elementary! Dear Eanes Elementary Families, This has been an incredible week at Eanes Elementary! We were thrilled to welcome students and staff back on campus this Monday following our Thanksgiving break. We can hardly believe how fast the school year is going. How is it already December 1st? This semester has been incredible, and we're loving our time with each and every young Mustang this year. Today marked a very special day for Eanes Elementary. We were incredibly fortunate to have Jesse Ruben on campus today to share his inspiring We Can approach to life with students and staff. Following our school wide assembly, each grade level had a block of time to meet with Mr. Ruben and to discuss how to make a positive impact on the world around us. This day would not have happened without Mrs. Michelle Corbett, our EE School Counselor's, vision. After hearing about Mr. Ruben's We Can song and his We Can Project, she and Mrs. Hubbard led a special SEL lesson in each classroom, and every student composed an I Can message that best met his or her goal for making a powerful change in the world. Please take a moment to check out the photos of this unbelievable day, and if you see Mrs. Corbett around campus, be sure to thank her for making this dream come to reality for our entire Eanes Elementary community. SELF-AWARENESS: “There is an emerging body of research that indicates mindfulness can help children improve their abilities to calm down when they are upset and to make better decisions,” which is being self-aware. “Establishing a gratitude practice … is a fundamental component of mindfulness.” Teaching kids to be thankful is one way to practice gratitude. “My family does this at dinner when we each share one thing we are thankful for.” The article “8 Ways to Teach Mindfulness to Kids” gives additional strategies on how to teach your child to be mindful. Daniel Goleman introduces the strategy of using “Breathing Buddies” to help younger children learn how to be mindful: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=scqFHGI_nZE SELF-MANAGEMENT: Self-control or self-management is an important skill for children to learn. “Studies have shown that impulsivity in childhood has been linked to substance abuse, risky sexual behavior, criminal activity and aggression in adolescence and adulthood.” One way to help children learn how to control their impulses is to teach the child how to “think through the problem.” Teach your child how to solve the problem rather than reacting “to a feeling”. “Teaching Kids Self-Control” gives specific strategies parents can use to teach their children how to “learn to be thoughtful and practice restraint.”
