February 2, 2018 We Can, & We Will Be Somebody Who Makes Everybody Feel Like Somebody at Eanes Elementary! February 2, 2018 Dear Eanes Elementary Families, On a brighter note, our fifth graders had the opportunity to visit Hill Country Middle School this week for the Fine Arts Assembly. Students were greeted by HCMS students, staff, and administration as they were treated to a performance by the band, orchestra, and choir. It is the first of many exciting conversations our fifth graders will have this spring as they begin their ascent to HCMS! This week marked the 100th Day of School for our EE Mustangs! Classes celebrated this momentous day in a variety of ways, and fun was had by all! Congratulations on being 100 days smarter, students! We are so proud of your growth, progress, and enthusiasm for learning! Last, but certainly not least, our students have had the incredible opportunity to embrace mindfulness with the help of Sensei Jonathan Hewitt from Life Kido. Mr. Hewitt came to EE in the fall to visit the PTO as their special guest, where he led parents through an interactive experience of mindfulness and calming strategies that they could share with their own children. In January, Mr. Hewitt visited our EE staff during a Wednesday staff meeting where he encouraged us to embrace mindfulness by identifying our physical and emotional status in the analogy of "puddle", "ice", and "river". For four consecutive Fridays, the first beginning last week, our students cycle through the EE Mustang Room to experience this mindful practice alongside their peers. Be sure to ask your child all about the ice, puddle, and river scoop! Thank you to our PTO for its generosity in funding this incredible experience for students, families, and staff members!! Thank you for a wonderful week, Mustangs. Enjoy your weekend, and stay well!

Healthy Mustangs Check out the following link for great ideas for snacks for your young, EE Mustang! https://snacksafely.com/snacklist-20170906.pdf Social-Awareness and caring for others is the EISD SEL focus for the third nine weeks. Empathy is being able to understand and value someone else's perspective. It's having compassion for others even when they are different. There are many ways parents can support their children in learning how to be empathic and caring. Our children are watching our behaviors and paying attention to how we are treating others. One way is to teach our children acceptance and respect is to model empathetic, caring behavior. "Take an interest in helping others through community outreach [and] bring your kids when appropriate. Get involved in programs that promote diversity" and expose your children "to a wide range of people and cultures". Talk to your kids about your involvements and let them know tolerance and acceptance are important to you. "Open and honest communication is the best jumping off point for teaching kids about tolerance and empathy." To learn other ways on how to teach your child tolerance and empathy, read "6 Great Ways to Foster Tolerance and Empathy in Your Children". Another article that addresses the importance of modeling empathetic behavior is "Cultivating Empathy" by Harvard Graduate School of Education, Making Caring Common Project.
