September 15, 2017 We Can, & We Will Be Somebody Who Makes Everybody Feel Like Somebody at Eanes Elementary! Mrs. Ryan's Weekly Message Dear Eanes Elementary Families, This Wednesday, we enjoyed our first Eanes Elementary Campus Leadership Team meeting. This committee is comprised of staff members, parents, community members, and business members who serve in an advisory role to best support students, faculty, the community, and campus initiatives . We are so fortunate to have dedicated members on this committee. During our meeting, we reviewed our 2017-18 Campus Improvement Plan (CIP) as well as initiatives we are continuing from past years and beginning with this new year. Each month we will explore "big picture" initiatives that pertain to our campus. This committee will also review and vote to approve, deny, or table funding requests with the Instructional Enrichment Funds from the PTO. We will review professional development requests, instructional materials requests, and additional purchase requests brought forth by staff members throughout the year. We look forward to sharing out our take-aways from this committee's work throughout the school year. A huge celebration from this meeting was the approval of funding for a campus-wide assembly led by Jesse Ruben, requested by one of our School Counselors, Michelle Corbett. Many of you remember the work our campus did with creating "We Can" cards and singing together the "We Can" song during SEL lessons last year and during a school wide assembly, and this morning we announced during assembly that the superstar would be an EE guest of honor in November. Jesse Ruben's mission in his We Can Project is as follows: "A service learning initiative that inspires and profoundly connects students of all ages to the difference they can make in their lives, their communities, and in the world." Like Jesse Ruben, at Eanes Elementary we believe We Can make a difference in the world, one young Mustang at a time! We are thrilled to share more details on this campus-wide, full-day of learning experience that we'll have as we finalize our plans. What we will have is a full-campus assembly in the morning where all EE parents are welcome to attend. Following this, grade levels will cycle through the library to meet with Mr. Ruben in a smaller setting where they'll discuss what they can and will do to better the world in age-appropriate language. For more information about Jesse Ruben and his work, check out the following websites: The We Can Project: http://www.wecanwecanwecan.com/ Jesse Ruben's Website: http://www.jesseruben.com/ Looking ahead, Tuesday, September 26, 2017 will be our first District-wide Early Release Day. In the afternoon, staff members will be participating in professional development with job-alike teachers. All Eanes Elementary students will be dismissed at 12:45 PM, and lunches WILL be served in the EE cafeteria on this date.
We hope you'll take time this weekend to enjoy some P-D-F with your child(ren)! At Eanes Elementary, We Can, & We Will Be Somebody Who Makes Everybody Feel Like Somebody! Thanks for a great week! Social and emotional learning (SEL) provides the foundation for this environment. EISD has chosen to highlight relationship skills as our SEL focus for the first nine weeks. Using Second Step as our curriculum, teachers are helping students develop the skills necessary to develop healthy relationships with others. As our partners in education, we encourage you to support our efforts in this area. The Parent Toolkit is a resource for parents that was developed by NBC News Education Nation and is supported by Pearson. The Toolkit provides parents a wealth of information, in English and Spanish, on social and emotional development in addition to academics, health & wellness, financial literacy, and college & career. According to the Parent Toolkit one way to help your elementary school student learn social skills and nurture relationship-building abilities is to teach the “sandwich” technique. “In basic terms, this method involves ‘sandwiching’ the feedback or problem between a compliment and a positive conclusion.” If your child feels a friend is being unkind, teach your child how to handle the problem by starting with a positive, sharing the concern, and ending with another positive. For example, “I am glad we are friends, and I want to be friends. At lunch yesterday, you yelled at me and made me sad. I want to be friends so next time, could you tell me if I’m doing something you don’t like.”
